2011-2011 FHS PE Rules/Regulations

Freedom High School ANNEX Physical Education Department

Rules and Regulations

Insurance

It is recommended that the student purchase the regular school insurance as this covers the student in physical education class.

Uniforms

All students should come to physical education (PE) class ready to learn! Students will engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity daily during PE classes, and working out at this intensity will elevate the heart rate and cause the students to perspire. To reinforce the importance of personal hygiene, we require that the clothes worn for PE should be something other than what was worn to school that day.

Physical educators strive to help all students develop an appreciation for physical activity and the ability to make healthy choices. An important healthy choice that students can make is being prepared to engage in physical activity, and this should include bringing suitable clothing for PE.

Appropriate PE attire includes shorts or sweatpants, a t-shirt, socks, and sneakers. No sandals of any type are allowed due to documented safety issues. PE attire must meet the LCPS dress code.  As a service to our school community, LCPS solicits bids from vendors for a volume purchase and offers an affordable option for PE attire that may be purchased through the individual schools, which consists of Russell® shorts and a Russell® t-shirt with the LCPS logo. The cost is $7 for the shorts and $3 for the t-shirt and these may be purchased during your child’s PE class.

As physical educators, we value your child’s health and appreciate the help of all LCPS parents and guardians to be sure that students come to school with appropriate attire for physical education so that they come to us ready to participate and learn! Please be sure that students have clean clothes for PE each day so that we can focus on what we value, which is helping all LCPS students to be active and healthy.

Locks and Lockers

Each student is provided with a combination lock and a small locker to keep gym materials secured. The PE department will not be responsible for any contents.

Lost locks should be reported to the teacher. Replacement cost for a new lock is $5.00. Locks from home may not be used.

It is the responsibility of the student, not the instructor, to properly lock up personal belongings. FHS is NOT RESPONSIBLE for any unsecured items left in the locker rooms. We will be sharing the locker rooms with middle school students this year so it is HIGHLY ADVISED that ALL ITEMS of VALUE be SECURED in the STUDENTS MAIN LOCKER in the POD.

Rentals

The PE Department provides rental uniforms and shoes for students who may occasionally forget their uniforms. Each student gets 2 rentals per quarter (except 4th qt). No rentals will be given out during the 1st week back in PE. If you need a rental you will need to notify your teacher before the tardy bell. Rentals will be given out immediately after the tardy bell rings.

Gym Regulations

The locker rooms will be closed 10 minutes after every late bell. Students who come to class with an unexcused tardy pass will not be permitted to dress out and points will be deducted. An alternate assignment will be given.

-Gum, food or drinks are not allowed in the athletic facilities.

-No jewelry.

-Students should stay off the gym floors when not in PE class wearing proper foot wear.

-Students are not permitted to use any equipment unless authorized and supervised by an instructor.

-Due to the small space in the ANNEX locker rooms, students should NOT BRING THEIR BACKPACKS TO PE. PLEASE LEAVE ALL ITEMS IN YOUR MAIN LOCKER in the POD. It is advised that large sums of money or expensive belongings not be brought into the locker room. This includes IPODS, and CELLPHONES. For students who have PE during 3rd or 7th blocks, you may bring your lunch only.

-PE bathrooms and locker facilities are to be used only during PE class time.

-All students must be in the locker room before the tardy bell rings. After dressing, the students should report to their designated area for instruction.

-At the end of class, students are to remain in the auxiliary gym until the bell rings or dismissed by the instructor.

-Profanity and stealing will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly.

-No horseplay or running in the shower or locker areas.

-Injuries sustained during PE class must be reported to the instructor immediately after the injury.

-Extended absences from PE, with the exception of absences due to school sponsored activities, may require make-up work. Make up work is the responsibility of the student and should be obtained from the instructor immediately upon their return to school.

-Students are given sufficient time to shower at the end of class if they desire. They must furnish their own soap and towels.

Doctor Notes and Excuses

-All doctor’s notes (licensed physician) should be taken to the school nurse before school and a copy should be provided to the teacher. The instructor may give a student excused from physical activity written assignment to obtain class credit.

-Students will be required to dress out and limit their activity with a note from home. Excuses from home must be limited to no more than 2 per grading period. There are ten days of PE during the grading period and class participation is expected. Notes from home should include a phone number where the parent/guardian can be reached during the school day.
