
Curriculum
The Loudoun County elementary music curriculum consists of a well-planned sequence of developmentally appropriate experiences leading to clearly defined skills and knowledge. The program is designed to actively involve students of all learning modalities using materials carefully selected for their aesthetic value. The Loudoun County curriculum is aligned with the National Standards of Arts Education and the Virginia Music Standards of Learning (SOL).
National Standards of Arts Education
1. Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music;
2. Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music;
3. Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments;
4. Compose and arrange music within specific guidelines;
5. Read and notate music;
6. Listen to, analyze, and describe music;
7. Evaluate music and music performances;
8. Understand relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts;
9. Understand music in relation to history and culture
Music Classes
Students in grades one through five meet with their Music teacher twice a week. Each music instructional time is 30 minutes. Through a variety of activities, students will develop their music skills in the following areas:
1. Rhythm
2. Melody
3. Harmony
4. Form & Expressive Elements
5. Movement
6. Orchestral and World Instruments
7. Period/Composer Appreciation
8. Multicultural Music and Literature
