Welcome to Frances Hazel Reid (FHR) Elementary School and thank you for visiting our website.  I am very fortunate and grateful to be leading a school with an incredible staff and a very enthusiastic parent base that consistently works collaboratively with us to provide our children with fun and engaging learning experiences.

We are committed as a staff to constantly assessing and improving our efforts in providing a rigorous curriculum by utilizing best teaching practices to improve the academic achievement of all children.  During the spring of 2013 our staff worked collaboratively with parent volunteers to provide our children with an inaugural Science Explosion week.   The entire experience exceeded all expectations and was just one example of what can be done when everyone works together for our children.  We are very excited about holding our second Science Explosion week in the fall of 2013.

Our teachers design lessons using interactive Promethean Boards that are in each classroom.  The technology not only enhances instructional delivery and an increased level of student engagement, but also opens the doors for our children to access a global society.  Our students participate in virtual field trips on a regular basis (the Jason project is just one example).  Our PTA supports our efforts in providing cutting edge technology for our students by affording wireless keypads, document cameras, and electronic voting tools for our classrooms.  For the upcoming school year we are very excited about purchasing our first set of ten I-pads to be used throughout the school in different projects.

Come visit and ask our children what they most enjoy about our school.  Some of the responses that have been shared with me include (in no particular order):  my teacher, Donuts with Dads, math, March Madness, art, blue tickets, reading, BINGO, my friends, the school play, music, history, recess, Football Math, PE, the parent volunteers, Veteran’s Day program, the variety show, IXL (thanks PTA), Turkey Tunes, lunch (no, I’m not making that response up), the assemblies, Songbirds, field trips, and squid day.

Research consistently shows the importance of a positive attitude and developing good relationships with others in the learning process.  Our school counselors work collaboratively with parents, staff, and students alike in leading our school in our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program.   More information may be found in our August 2013 Reid Reporter.  Our staff does a fabulous job of cheerfully greeting each other, visitors, and our students each day and is very successful in turning frowns upside down very quickly.

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in elementary education and taught various grade levels in different school districts for fourteen years.  I earned a graduate degree from the University of Maryland in school counseling and served as an elementary school counselor for four years.  I then earned my administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia and served as an assistant principal at Lowes Island Elementary School prior to becoming the principal at Frances Hazel Reid.  My husband and I live in Leesburg and are blessed with two beautiful girls.  Our oldest daughter is a graduate of Loudoun County Public Schools and is currently in college.  Our youngest daughter is a sophomore at Tuscarora High School and regularly volunteers at FHR along with many high school students from both Tuscarora and Heritage High Schools.

Communication is essential in providing the best for your child(ren).  We will communicate with you when we have celebrations as well as concerns to share.  We ask that you do the same.  My goal is to work with each student, staff member, and parent in order to provide the best possible experience for each of our children.  I welcome phone calls, emails, and visits to talk through any concerns that parents may have.  I am also very appreciative of the words of encouragement that I receive as well in our continuous efforts in providing the best for your children.

We are excited about the upcoming school year.  Our theme will be Believe, Dream, and Inspire (see the August 2013 Reid Reporter newsletter for more information).

Every great dream begins with a dreamer.  Always remember, you have the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.  ~ Harriet Tubman
