Governor's School Academic Programs and Mentorships - Summer 2012

The Summer Residential Governor’s Schools Academic Programs and Mentorships are month-long residential programs for 10th and 11th grade students in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The goal of each Governor’s School is to provide opportunities for intellectual as well as social and emotional growth for those who attend.

There are three Academic Programs:  (1) Agriculture, (2) Humanities, and (3) Mathematics, Science and Technology.  The programs are housed on various campuses throughout the Commonwealth and are free to the students.

There are three Mentorship Programs:  (1) Engineering at NASA/NIA, (2) Marine Science at the Virginia Institute for Marine Science, and (3) Life Sciences and Medicine.

Applications are due to Mr. Royhab by December 16, 2011.  You must submit hard copies in person; electronic copies can not be accepted.  You will notice that Governor’s School requests two teacher recommendations.  They are also due to Mr. Royhab by December 16, 2011.  Please give your teacher a minimum of two weeks notice when requesting any letter of recommendation.

Detailed information and applications can be found on the Governor’s School webpage.  Make sure you use the appropriate applications - "Academic" or "Mentorship" -  depending on the program you want to apply to.  Note that the first page of the application must be keyed rather than printed in by hand (hence the need to download an electronic copy of the application).  While it is not a requirement, we recommend that you key the entire application.  If you do not have access to a computer and/or the internet, please let Mr. Royhab know.

The application asks you for the "School Division" and the "School Division DOE Code."  The school division is Loudoun County Public Schools and the DOE code is 053-0420.

We have also created application checklists to assist you:

Information - including BWHS contact information - to help you fill out the first page of the application can be found here.

Good luck!  Let us know if you have any questions!
