Today marks the end of April and the end of Autism Awareness Month.  Hopefully throughout the month you've learned some new information about Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Here is what you should remember…At some point in your life, if not already, you will likely know someone or have a family member with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism is not contagious…you can’t catch it.

You may not always know someone has Autism Spectrum Disorder because they may be very high functioning and have what we call Asperger’s Syndrome. Regardless of all these things, the most important thing to remember is to be accepting and patient of, as well as kind to all people because you never know their whole story!

Why is it called Autism Spectrum Disorder? The effects that Autism has on individuals differ from person to person. Some people diagnosed with Autism are non-verbal, which means they do not speak or speak very little, and require assistance to complete day to day tasks. Others are high functioning, intelligent individuals who participate daily in school, work and independent activities, just like you and me. These people are usually considered to have Asperger’s Syndrome.  What is Electronic Waste, also known as e-waste? E-waste is all and any electronics that are thrown away. When such electronics are not disposed of properly, they are shipped to third world countries where they are broken down for their precious metals. These processes, which are not done safely, are harmful to people as well as the environment. You can help so many people by just recycling your electronics to a trusted facility. Electronics can be properly disposed of at specialized electronic waste plants. Disposing your electronics there will reduce the detrimental effects on people around the world.  Stone Hill MS Spectrum students will be coordinating an E-Waste collection drive this Spring.   More information and collection dates will be sent out soon.

We have an update from Gabriella about her goal to collect 10,000 letters to Santa.  You may recall that Gabriella is a young girl diagnosed with a brain tumor and wanted to give back to the Make a Wish Foundation who is granting her wish this year.  545 stingray students wrote letters as part of that campaign. Well, Gabriella was able to deliver a lot more than 10,000 letters.  The final count was an amazing 240,983 letters!  That resulted in funding to pay for 36 more wishes granted to seriously ill children. This is a perfect example of how doing a little thing can have a really big impact!

Take a moment and Imagine if every one of us could do an act of kindness to honor the Sandy Hill Elementary School community and those lost in the recent tragedy. Journalist Ann Curry recently asked "What if" and has started a viral campaign -26 Acts- to spread hope and goodwill. Let's see how much kindness we can spread throughout our community. Here's how it works: Perform a random act of kindness --big or small-- for someone and write your good deed and name on a post-in note. Then, place your note on the "Acts of Kindness" banner located in the cafeteria. The banner will be up through January.

Lastly, please stop by all the Lost and Found areas. There are many items that need to be claimed.
