The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey instrument used to gauge the level of student participation at universities and colleges in Canada and the United States as it relates to learning. The results of the survey help administrators and instructors to assess their students' student engagement.

The NSSE was first piloted in 1999. More than 1,400 different colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada have participated in NSSE since it was first administered in 2000.

Engagement has been determined as one of the key factors to predict student success in college and beyond.  Colleges and universities pay a fee to participate and have their programs assessed.  This resource can be an insightful alternative to more highly publicized and marketed rankings and lists.
