The library staff is teaching research skills throughout all elementary grade levels. As children learn to list their sources, they also learn about plagiarism and how to avoid it.
You can help your child learn the importance of always listing the sources for information used. The following is the progression we are using at Waterford.
1st Grade: Students will name the book they used for information.
2nd Grade: Students will list the title and author of the book(s) they used and the word internet if they used a website.
3rd Grade: Students will list the title, author, publisher of books used, and/or the name of the internet site they used.
4th Grade: Students will list the title, author, publisher, copyright date of all books used, and/or the name and URL of the internet sites used.
5th Grade: Students will list all of the above and put it in the MLA format used in Middle School.
