SECOND NINE WEEKS PLAN

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL)

GRADE LEVELS 1-5

ELL includes the following Thematic Units of study:

        Foods and Nutrition                                      Content Support (1-5)

            Thanksgiving                                                 U.S. Flag 

            Celebrations Around the World                      Map and Globe Skills

            Animals in Winter                                         The 50 States

            Winter Weather and Activities                      Seasons of the Year

            Transportation                                              Months of the Year

 

The ELL curriculum includes the following essential elements:

 

Listening - Learning to understand English spoken in a wide range of social and academic contexts.

 

Speaking - Learning to speak English, with increasing accuracy and fluency, in order to convey meaning appropriate to a wide range of social and academic contexts.

 

Reading - Learning to read in English with increasing comprehension for a variety of purposes.

 

Writing - Learning to produce written English with increasing fluency and accuracy to convey meaning appropriately in a range of social and academic contexts.

 

Culture - Learning concepts that result in knowledge and awareness of the history and culture of classmates, Virginia, and the United States.

 

Highlighted Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia

Limited English Proficiency SOL for students ranging from Proficiency Level 1- 4

 Goal 1, Standard 1

To use English to communicate in social settings: Students will use English to participate in social interactions, descriptors, sharing, requesting information, expressing needs, feelings, and ideas, using nonverbal communication in social interactions, getting personal needs met, engaging in conversations, conducting transactions

Goal 2, Standard 2

To use English to achieve academically in all content areas: Students will use English to obtain, process, construct, and provide subject matter information in spoken and written form

The Pathways Literacy model  for grades 1 and 2 is reinforced in ELL class which covers SOL 1.1 1.13.  SOL 1.9 Integrate phonetic strategies, meaning clues and language structure when reading and SOL 1.13 Form letters correctly and space words and sentences and SOL 1.12 Write to communicate ideas

Support for classroom content SOLs appropriate to students grade level

English Language Proficiency Standards 3,4,5: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of mathematics,science, and social studies.
