The primary role of the reading specialist is to work with students in small groups. The groups are chosen based on educational assessments and teacher observations. The Pathways Intervention model is used to provide the small group instruction. Each lesson includes reading an appropriately leveled book, work with sight words, and word study. There is also a focus on helping students become independent readers by developing their reading strategies.
The reading specialist is also an essential member of the RI Leadership team. She participates in the Universal Screening process and helps to place students in appropriate intervention groups.
