Performance Selections
Bags' Groove is a jazz album and tittle track recorded by Miles Davis in 1954. "Bags" was vibraphonist Milt Jackson's nickname, a member of the famed Modern Jazz Quartet. The title composition and the three compositions on the album by the young Sonny Rollin went on to become jazz standards.
I Remember Clifford is the name of a jazz composition written by jazz tenor saxophonist Benny Golsonn in memory of Clifford Brownn, an influential and highly-rated jazz trumpeterr who died in an auto accident when he was only 25 years old. He and Golson had done a stint in Lionel Hampton's band together.
The song became an instant standard,as musicians paid tribute to Brown by recording their personal reading of it. Golson later said, "it took me several weeks, but I'd never written a composition like it before." I wanted to create a melody that the public would remember, and associate it with him."
I Remember Clifford is also the name of an album by Arturo Sandovall. The entire album is a tribute to Brown, who was a great influence on Sandoval, and features Golson's tune.
Woodchopper's Ball, also known as "At the Woodchopper's Ball" is a 1939 jazzcomposition by Joe Bishop and Woody Herman. The up-tempo blues tune was the Woody Herman Orchestra's biggest hit, as well as the most popular composition of either composer, selling a million records.
The tune has been performed by numerous artists and is considered a jazz standard. The original recording by Woody Herman and His Orchestra received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2002.
Birdland is a compositionin in honor of the legendary Jazz Club in New York City.
It was Charlie Parker, familiarly known to his fans and fellow musicians as "Bird," a contraction of Yardbird, his formal nickname, who was the dynamic creative personality and genius of the alto saxophone who served as the inspiration for Birdland.
The original Birdland opened sixty years ago in December, 1949, with Charlie Parker as the headliner and the club. Currently the club is located in midtown Manhattan and has been treated to some of the best jazz on the planet, including memorable sets by such musicians as Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Roy Haynes, Michel Legrand, Dave Brubeck, Pat Martino, Tony Williams, Hank Jones, Michel Petrucciani, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Marian McPartland, John Pizzarelli, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Jon Hendricks, George Shearing, James Moody, Yellowjackets, John Scofield, Phoebe Snow, Dave Holland, and Tito Puente, as well as the big bands of Chico O'Farrill, Duke Ellington, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Maria Schneider.
