ELL Course Syllabus

Course Objectives

The ELL courses are designed for students to become proficient in the English language. Students will develop and improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. The following ELL courses are offered:

6E, 7E Language Arts/ 8E English at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels

6E, 7E, and 8E Reading at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels

6E, 7E, and 8E Resource

6E, 7E, and 8E Social Studies

Methods of Evaluation/Grading Rubrics

Students will be evaluated based on their class participation, knowledge (assessed by tests, quizzes, and homework), and English usage. The following lists the method to determine a student’s grade:

Formative (20%):

Homework                               10%

Classwork and Participation      10%

Summative (80%):

Projects                                    25%

Tests                                        40%

Quizzes                                    15%

                                               100%

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for:

1.     Coming to class on time.

2.     Being prepared to learn and to work.

3.     Bringing all supplies and materials to class.

4.     Completing and turning in all homework on time.

5.     Turning in all make-up work on time.

6.     Bring book of choice for silent reading every day.

Homework Information

Homework must be completed and turned in on time to receive full credit. Most homework assignments count 10 points each. Grades for homework will decrease by one point each day until the assignment is turned in.

Supplies Needed

Students will need to bring the following supplies to class every day:

2 binders with lined notebook paper

5 subject dividers

Composition notebook

Spiral notebook

          Pencils

          Pens (red, blue, and black)

           

 

Information About Make-Up Work

If a student is absent, he/she is responsible for seeing the teacher to pick up any assignments missed during the absence. Any assignments missed must be turned in the number of days absent plus one day.

Ms. O’Dell is available during the school during blocks 4A and 7B.

Ms. Rice is available during the school day during blocks 1A and 8B.

 

 

After-School Help Opportunities

Ms. O’Dell is available for help after school on Tuesdays.

Ms. Rice is available for help after school on Thursdays.

Students must sign up on the after-school help sheet in order to stay after school.

Students must have a permission slip from their parents saying they can stay after school. The note must say how the student will go home (bus, walk, parent pick-up).
