The 2008 winter guard were promoted from the A3 to the A2 class and also were WGI Richmond Regional Finalists in the Scholastic A class!  We're so proud of you!
 
    Broad Run High School has two competitive color guard ensembles. In the Fall Season the Color Guard is an integral part of the Marching Spartans, rehearsing and performing with the Marching Spartans at football games, parades and competitions throughout Virginia.     From November through April, the Winter Guard is a separate performance ensemble. The Winter Guard utilizes the same color guard equipment skills and drill that you see in the fall season but the winter shows are performed in a gym to recorded music (without instrumentalists) and may include much higher levels of dance choreography as well as thematic uniforms, sets and props to convey the message of the show. The Winter Guard competes throughout Northern Virginia and sometimes into North Carolina from January through April each year. Auditions are usually held in late October or early November each year. We are always looking for new members, both those with prior dance experience AND those with no experience who are hard-working, excited and eager to learn!

    THE 2008 SHOW!!
    This year the Broad Run High School Winter Guard is performing their show, "Ready, Set, Don't Go" which explores the emotions of a young woman as she gets ready to take the next step in life - to follow her dreams - and to leave home with the blessing of her parents. Throughout the show, performers embody both the excitement of what's to come combined with the uncertainty of leaving as they wait for their loved ones to be ready to let them go. Performers take turns moving the single prop, a suitcase, each time picking it up to go, moving a little closer to the door and then putting it back down, deciding to stay just a little longer.

    It can be thought of as the process we all go through in life as we grow, each year of our lives bringing us closer to the time where we will be ready to step out on our own...each year bringing our family and friends closer to the time when they will be ready to let go. It's as if the suitcase is there all along. We fill it with our hopes and dreams and memories as our parents watch and teach and encourage. One day we are finally ready to take all we have dreamt and all we have learned and step off on our own.

    Overlapping circles on the floor are symbolic of the stages of our lives with a diagonal line running through the middle leading to that inevitable day when we will take that next step. The focus of the drill sets shifts from circle to circle over the duration of the show reinforcing this progression.

    In the end, one performer is left looking to her friends and family for the courage she needs to take that step and finally leave. One by one, they are finally ready to let her go as they say goodbye, put the suitcase in her hand and step back so that she can, with confidence, follow her dreams.
